History of Yarrabin Guest Property
The idea of Australia's first guest property, or 'dude ranch,' came from Annie's father, Gavin Christie. The original property was purchased by Gavin's father, William, in 1956 with the intention of grazing sheep for wool. Many city friends would travel to the property to assist with the work, and to escape from the city. With this an idea was born. Gavin travelled to America in 1961 to work on 'dude ranches' for a year. He gained considerable knowledge and experience from this - many of the ideas from the dude ranches were incorporated into Yarrabin by Gavin and combined with a uniquely Australian character and atmosphere. |
| In April 1963, Yarrabin Guest Property opened its doors to the public. ('Yarrabin' is aboriginal for ghost gums - the property at that time had over 500 hectares of untouched gum tree forests.) Gavin, assisted by his parents, renovated the three bedroom homestead and began to market farm holidays. He married Sue in February 1964, and together they made Yarrabin Guest Property what it is today - a country oasis where city people, families and overseas guests can relax and enjoy the Australian country life and hospitality. |
